Elephant & Castle’s 2nd Breaking Chains Recap - Aug 14th, 2022

Elephant & Castles 2nd Breaking Chains Open Recap

Saturday 69 players headed to Fair Grove, Missouri to Peace Chapel’s PC-18 purse to compete in the 2nd Breaking Chains Open. A big thanks to Doug Bowen for the title sponsorship and Dynamic Discs for being there sponsorship as well! Because of the above two sponsors, each player (Pros & Ams) received a custom disc and a dri fit shirt. Thanks again!

Another special thanks goes out to Peace Chapel Assembly for being so hospitable. The church was opened for bathroom use as well as a huge conference room where players were able to grab there choice of meal (Baked Spaghetti or a pulled pork sandwich) and eat in the air conditioning between rounds. Both Dan Bull and Travis need a huge shout out of praise for their incredible work on the course. The grass and bunkers were cut beautifully. The course has never looked better. Thank you and great job guys!

PC-18 is definitely one of my favorite courses in the area. It challenges you as a Discgolfer in about every way. It can break you mentally if you are not careful. The bunkers, that were played as hazards, wreaked havoc on many including myself. Throwing accurately at all distances is definitely key.

There were 8 divisions that made up the field:

In the Rec division there were 14 players. Don Seo and Joel Barrientos both shot 62’s (the hot rounds) in the first round. Jon Seo continued o. His great play shooting a 60 2nd round that took home the “W”. Quinten Vols had a slow start with a 66, but made a big charge shooting the hot 2nd round of 59. He was able to jump Joel by two to finish 2nd. Joel finished 3rd.

In the Intermediate division, there were also 14 players. Tristen Sewell came out smoking shooting a 56 that was 4 better than Justin Hare who was in 2nd after round one. Michael Cory was in 3rd shooting a 62. It was Justin Hare who finished strong shooting a 58 to capture first with a come from behind win. Tristen finished 2nd and Michael Cory held on to 3rd.

Julie Crouch was the only lady in the Female 40+ division. She shot a 139 bettering her 1st round score by 7 strokes. Good job girl!

The MA+60 division was a roller coaster. John Parsons came out shooting a 65. This was 4 better than Roger Reid’s score and 3 better than Brad Hilton’s score. The second round Jon struggled and let both Brad and Roger pull ahead. Roger shot the hot second round of 68 to win. Brad took second.

There were 13 in the AM+40 field. Tobby Rector came out hot with a 58 to take the early lead. His consistent play, shooting a 59 second round was enough to take home the convincing win by 7. A big story in this division was Brandon Duncan’s major comeback Brandon shot a dismal first round of 70. He then came back and blistered the course shooting a 54! This jumped him to seven spots into second. Jeff Ford was only a stick off 2nd for his third place finish.

In the Advanced division there were also 13 players. This was definitely the tightest race in the field. Only 3 strokes separated 1st from 5th. Drake Ford was tied for 6th going into the second round when he came out and destroy the course with a 52! He leap carded everyone for the win shooting a 108 (worth noting, this would have put him in 3rd in the Open field). Crazy Awesome kiddo! Josh Bernard’s 109 took second, Braxton Baker & Paul Dingman tied for third with a 110, and Alex Knof rounded up the top 5 shooting 111.

There were 9 players in the Open division. It was quite a battle at the top. Only two strokes separated 1st and 3rd. There was a 3 way tie between the top 3 finishers in the first round. Micah Noble, Brock Robler, and Noah Free all shot 52’s. The second round again was tight work Micah able to shoot the hot round of 50 to capture the win. Brock shot 51 for his 2nd place finish, and Noah matched his 1st round score of 52 to finish 3rd.

Great job on all players who cashed! Thank you all for coming out to the Breaking Chains Open. We will see you again soon!
